Today we were deciding which songs we would like to write, we had cover songs for all the stages of grief; Denial - Brothers in arms by Dire Strait, Anger - How you remind me by Nickelback, Bargaining – Iris by GooGoo Dolls, Depression – Wish you were here by Pink Floyd, Acceptance – Songbird by Fleetwood Mac. We intended to write two of the stages songs, so we had a conversation about which we felt were the least appropriate so we could write a song to suit the show better. We ended up deciding we wanted to remove Brothers in arms as the lyrical content doesn’t fit denial how we'd like it to, so to replace that we will be writing a song, along with that we will be replacing Songbird as Bluebell can't play the piano part with an original as well. I think replacing these songs were the most appropriate option, as lyrically they were the weakest linked to the subject we intended to get across. I personally was keen on having 'Songbird' as 'Acceptance' however after some deliberation with my group I compromised as the rest of the group felt it was the best one to change. Compromise is very important when working in groups, and I will continue to compromise throughout this project when making important decisions.

Today we started song writing for the songs to fit ‘Denial’ and ‘Acceptance,’ we started on ‘Denial’ and we struggled getting started. We knew we wanted the songs from each stage to blend into one another to make one seamless show so we started off by finding out what key the intro song ‘Mystery of Love by Sufjan Stevens’ it was in G major so we played around with chords in that key. With lyrics, Bluebell suggested we create a mind map around the word and feeling of denial which would help us produce lyrics. We then used those ideas off the mind map to help freestyle lyrics when playing the chord patterns repeatedly. We also took voice recordings of these freestyled lyrics to help choose which ones we thought fit best. I think this method of writing songs is very efficient and helps you stay close to the topic you're writing about which is essential in the type of writing we are trying to achieve. Next time however, we might want to try an alternative way of writing for example, "cut outs", which is a process where you cut out random phrases from a book or magazine and try and fit them together.
